According to a study, the average person only gains a single pound during the holidays.

We can do better than this.

Luckily for us, we are runners, and we are not average! Here are some pieces of advice to get the most out of your holiday season.

1. Only eat items that contain added sugar
Thanksgiving through Christmas is one of the few times of the year where there is often a continuous supply of pastries and desserts. From the break-room at work to christmas cookies for Santa, added sugar is never too far away. Dip these delicacies in coffee or milk for additional caffeine and protein. Gram for gram, dessert is the most efficient way to get calories in. And we all know how important being efficient is!

2. Take the holidays off from running
What can really limit holiday weight gain is physical activity. Taking a break from exercise will limit your caloric expenditure so you get the maximum benefit from the massive sugar consumption during the holidays. As an added benefit, this rest period will leave you fully recovered to start a solid winter training block.

3. Use Egg Nog as your post workout recovery drink
The traditional eggnog ingredients are milk, sugar, eggs, and liquor. This is a perfect holiday alternative to the popular post workout drink of chocolate milk. Eggnog has protein to rebuild your muscles and sugar to help replenish your glycogen stores. If you really tried, it could probably be mixed in the coveted post-workout 4:1 carbohydrate to protein ratio.

4. Do not count calories
The lack of distinct meal periods during the holidays due to always having meat and cheese trays or desserts around makes calorie counting incredibly difficult. Have faith in your ability to eat plenty of food!

5. Variety is the spice of life
Aim for trying at least 7 different types of food, every day. If you can try at least one item that you have never had before, even better!
